How To Extend a Job Offer Thatll Be Accepted To ensure the offer you exend to a candidate is met with success, its best to look at it as a process that starts from the first time you engage with them. One of the biggest mistakes recruiters make when extending an offer is doing so while having a lack of information at their disposal. As a result, candidates can be turned off by compensation, title, start date, or other factors that really should have been addressed earlier on, not at the eleventh hour! During the recruitment process, make an effort to gather key data points during the initial conversations. As the third-party recruiter, you should be learning what factors will motivate your candidate to accept your job. Some questions need to gather answers to are: What are their salary expectations for a new job and how does this compare to their most recent W2 earnings? (Be sure to understand how much of that was the basic element and how much was bonus) What is their ideal job title? What is their location and ability / willingness to commute (if required)? Why are they interested in the position? What are their long term career goals? What kind of company/ culture do they prefer? If your candidates answers to these questions dont align with what the job is offering or requiring, then their expectations are not realistic for this position and it is important to discuss it immediately. You do not always need to resolve the difference then, but make sure any differences are not going to be a deal breaker! It is also important to document the data you obtain so you can refer to it later on in the process and build a compelling offer pitch when the time comes. Not only should this information be documented, but it should also be confirmed multiple times and revisited throughout the process. After each interview you should be re-confirming these data points. Ask these simple questions: âWe discussed a salary (and possible bonus if available) of âXXXXâ, is this still what you would be looking for?â âDoes this position still fall in line with your career goals and objectives?â Is there anything that is concerning to you about the role at this stage? Pre-Close: Before delivering the offer, you should be focussed on pre-closing the candidate. A pre-close will usually come just before the offer. The pre-close is a two-step process: Begin by saying the company has not made a final decision, but that you want to have the candidateâs best interest in mind if an offer does come. Then ask a simple pre-close question: âIf I am able to get you an offer of $XXXX (plus bonus if applicable) and a title of XXXXX, would you accept this role?â It is important to use the salary and title that will be in the offer letter so you know if they will accept or not! The whole idea of the pre-close is to get them thinking about accepting the role, before they actually have the offer come their way. When you then extend the offer, there should be no surprises and it should be accepted! Other questions to keep in mind during the pre-close: When would you be able to start? Do you think your current company will provide a counter offer and is there a chance you would accept? What could they do to keep you? Do you have any other competing offers? Once a pre-close has been done successfully, you should be comfortable that your official offer will be accepted.

How I started taming my workaholic tendencies After my first visit to the farm, I quickly invited myself back. Im coming there without my kids, I told him. When I got there, he made me hamburger that was shaped a little too much like how it might have looked in the cows body, and then he asked me what I wanted. I want this to be a date, I said. And then what do you want? Well. I dont know. I guess we kiss. Thats what you do on a date. The farmer laughed. And he asked me if I thought I could live on a farm. I said no. I said I was thinking this would be a summer fling. Im sure I dont need to tell you that he is not the summer fling type. I sat across from him at his kitchen table thinking that he is so simple and stupid for thinking I could be serious about him. After dinner we walked through his fields, over his creek, and next to his hay, and an hour later I thought that I am so simple and stupid for thinking that just because he is a farmer, I am not serious. So I went back to the farm three times in one week to negotiate how a date might work. Each time I felt like I was crazy. What am I doing with a farmer? I am already sometimes sleeping only four hours a night. There is no room in my life for anything but kids and work. The next time I was there, it was time to put the chickens back in the house or pen or whatever it is that they live in. I noticed that the farmer sort of encourages them to go to the house, but really, they could get away at any time. But they go back to the house because he gives them everything they could want there. One hen will not come in. The farmer waits. He negotiates. Then he walks away. He says the hen is not ready. I worry out loud that she will be eaten by coyotes. He says she will decide to go in before that happens, and hell be there. He says its timing. The timing is what gets me, though. This is not a good time in my life to fall for a farmer. Of all the things to invest my time in, this is not one of them. Its not something that will work out. So moments of doubt turn into time-management panic. Like, at the end of our second date, the farmer walked me to my car, which was on his front lawn, and he kissed me goodnight. I got in the car and looked behind me, and somehow, in the span of seconds between going from the car back to the house, he started peeing. On the front lawn. I got out of the car. Are you kidding me?!!? Are you peeing on your front lawn? Are you nuts? This is normal. No. This is not normal! He laughs. I laugh. But I am not sure we are laughing for the same reasons. On the farm you pee outside if youre outside and you pee inside if youre inside. I tell him this is a huge cultural gap and we have a huge problem. I come back the next day even though the more things are weird with the farmer the more I worry that I am making a poor time management decision by spending time with him. The next day, he is very tired. He woke up at 4 a.m. because he heard thunder and he knew that the mother who has new twin calves would lose one in the rain. He went out and found the lost one and brought it back to the mom. He tells me this story while we sit on the sofa on his porch. This is where we do everything. I hope we will make out on the sofa. But he is tired. And I am scared of being rebuffed, so we talk. How much would it cost you to lose a calf? About $200. You do all that work for months and months just for $200? Its not that much work every day for one calf. This is an exception. But bringing the calf back to its mother is not about the money. Its about taking care of the animal. You can see where this is headed, right? We have this conversation 500 times. Heres another version, different day, same porch: I cant move to the farm because I have so much more money than you do. I will get into the same situation with my last marriage. I will have all the power and it will be terrible. I dont think you have more money. I have more money. You made $15,000 last year. And it was a good year. I made $15,000 for one speech just last week. You make a lot of money, but you spend it. Youre in debt. Its about cash flow. I have a lot coming in. I could have a lot. If I decided to be good with money. My land is worth $2 million. Really!??! Thats so exciting! Id never sell it. The land means way more to me than the money. And its ridiculous that you spend $200 on a pair of jeans. So I do this drive, this three-hour drive, again and again to see the farmer. Because I feel like I am understanding myself better and better as I go farther and farther from where I think I belong. Until I find myself in a tornado, ignoring his phone calls to tell me that a tornado is too dangerous and I should stay home. I read that people do totally crazy things when they are in love, but how do you explain me driving to the farm in a tornado to negotiate something that is not a summer fling while we sort of start having a summer fling? If I cant count it toward being in love, then does it just count toward losing my mind? But I dont think Im losing my mind. For example, I know its the farmers understanding that my children matter most that makes him hard to regard as just a summer fling. One of the times I had the kids with me, I spent most of my time worrying that they would get into trouble, while the farmer did things like help them climb up onto hay scrunched up into sushi-shaped rolls that were too large for the kids to get down from. And then he said, Thank you for yelling at the kids for stepping on the corn so I could focus on just having fun on the farm with them. For a while the farmer was very careful about the kids only coming on days he could be around, because of things like the electric fence, which he has memories of as a kid that include falling on it while riding a bicycle and getting shocked fifty times. But then I got an email from him that said, You are welcome at my house with the boys. I trust your judgment and I think you know most of the dangers. But remind me to take the gun out of the house. I never thought Id get an email about a gun that was so touching. So I cut back on work. But I still did an interview with a teachers publication while sitting on the farmers front porch. He laid down next to me with his arm on my leg. He said he likes hearing me work but he also likes that I dont bring the Blackberry when I go to his fields. Theres reception in the field? Yeah. Other people bring it there when they visit. I dont tell him that I would have brought it if Id have known. Because I dont want to be that person. But its so scary that this might go on too long and be squandered time. I snuggle up next to him on the porch and I tell him that he makes me nervous because Im risking so much for him. He says, What exactly are you risking? And he points out that he has agreed to allow his very private life to be the subject of very public blog posts, which makes him nervous. I am silent. I feel awkward because Im supposed to be the queen of work life balance. But I tell him that cutting back on work seems like a huge risk to me. I know that people who are workaholics are scared of two things: Not being great at work, and having to face an empty personal life. And Im worried about both. Its so hard to cut back on work that I adore to see a guy who is a complete wild card in my life. But I see now that the farmer doesnt need to be THE ONE. And theres value for me to just stop working so hard. Thats the first step. Im just lucky I found someone who makes me want to try that.

Why Employers and Job Seekers Arent Connecting There seems to be a lot of buzz about shortage of qualified workers from companies around the county. Has anyone really taken a good look at why this is? In my roaming this week, the topic came up in every conversation. Perhaps that was because it was on my agenda more than the other persons. But we had some interesting discussions. One theory is that theres a breakdown in communication. The companies/employers are concerned about a skills match AND a cultural fit, but how do they communicate their department or company culture in a way a job seeker can understand? All mission statements are not created equal. Not all companies live by their mission. It looks nice on the wall and the company website, but does it represent the culture? I am talking behaviors, where are those listed? We work late, we work autonomously, we socialize a lot during the workday, we are driven by hands-on management. If they are looking for a big picture kind of person, what behaviors are they looking for? How will they know them when they hear them? Where does that go on the resume? How would the job seeker know this if it isnt described in the job posting? Job seekers are generally not very good at representing themselves in their best light. Humble, frightened, intimidated, depressed, and other emotional issues are part of the reason. The written and verbal communication of their skills and talents are often not as strong as they could be, so it isnt the most qualified candidate who gets the job, but the one who is better at talking about their abilities who gets the job. Job seekers often times come across desperate without meaning to. This can be result of lack of focus or clarity in what they are looking for and/or what they are really great at doing. Inexperience in the search process is another reason for disconnect. Without meaning to, job seekers can come across rude, abrupt, aggressive, passive or something else other than they intend. There are certain rules of engagement employers expect to see and some of those are different today. Obviously, I am generalizing. There are exceptions to these rules on both sides. But can we agree that the hiring system is broken? Can we at least agree we have to do more to get people back to work? An interview is like a test. Not all people do well at tests. Sometimes we can learn to be better test-takers other times the tests are eliminated. Hiring employers, you owe it to yourselves and the community to be more transparent. Who are you really? What are the recognizable behaviors you will be hiring for? What are the real requirements of the job, not your wish-list? Can you prioritize them please, so we all know. Job seekers, you also owe it to yourselves to be more sure of what YOU are looking for and where youll be a good fit Do your homework, learn about the companies you would be a fit in. Be confident of your skills and what you can do and who you are. You wont be a fit for all companies and jobs, dont get discouraged. Large is out, small is in. Learn how your skills translate into a smaller organization. Tell STAR or accomplishment stories during the interview process. Learn the new rules of job search.
